Beaches & Surf

The Eastern Cape coastline is blessed with a mix of legendary surf breaks, quiet family beaches, and untouched stretches of sand where you can escape the crowds. Whether you’re chasing waves or sunsets, Jeffreys Bay and its surrounds deliver.

Jeffreys Bay Surf Spots

Supertubes
Known worldwide as one of the best right-hand point breaks on the planet, Supertubes is the crown jewel of Jeffreys Bay. It’s the main stage for the World Surf League’s annual J-Bay Open, drawing pro surfers and fans from across the globe. Waves can run for 300 meters or more — fast, powerful, and strictly for experienced surfers.

Point
Just down from Supertubes, Point offers a slightly softer, more forgiving wave. It’s popular with intermediate surfers looking for long rides without the pressure of Supertubes’ intensity. The atmosphere here is more relaxed, perfect for practicing carves and cutbacks.

Kitchen Windows
At the northern end of Jeffreys Bay, near Dolphin Beach, Kitchen Windows is a mellow break that’s ideal for beginners and longboarders. It’s also a fun spot for families, with the main beach amenities nearby.

St Francis Bay & Cape St Francis

St Francis Bay
Famous for its whitewashed houses with black roofs, canals, and laid-back feel. The beaches are generally quieter than Jeffreys Bay, making them ideal for family outings, casual swims, and strolls along the surf-washed sand. The small harbor is also a great place to watch fishing boats come in.

Cape St Francis
A rugged, natural stretch of coastline with fewer crowds and endless coastal charm. Surfers love Seal Point, while nature lovers can explore rock pools, tide-lines, and coastal trails. The Cape St Francis Lighthouse is a highlight, offering a touch of history and panoramic sea views.

Secluded Sands

Oyster Bay
A hidden gem about 25 km west of St Francis. Oyster Bay is wild and remote, with rolling dunes, long beaches, and a sense of untouched beauty. Great for horse riding, beach walks, and those who prefer to be far from the bustle.

Maitlands
Closer to Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), Maitlands Beach is framed by towering dunes and wide sandy stretches. It’s popular for sandboarding, picnics, and family outings, but still feels quiet and spacious. Strong currents make it less suited to casual swimming, but perfect for exploring.
